BharatGen, an ambitious new project in the realm of generative artificial intelligence (AI), is set to transform public services and enhance citizen participation across India. Officially launched in New Delhi by Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State, BharatGen aligns with India’s vision of becoming a global leader in advanced technologies and aims to leverage AI for societal good.
At the core of BharatGen's mission is the development of AI models capable of processing language, speech, and visual information. The initiative seeks to tackle various social challenges while focusing on several key goals:
Promoting Social Equality: BharatGen aims to ensure that AI technologies are accessible to all segments of society, fostering inclusivity.
Preserving Cultural Heritage: The project places a strong emphasis on representing India’s diverse languages and cultures within its AI models.
Accessibility: By prioritizing regional languages, BharatGen endeavors to make AI technology available to a broader audience, thus enhancing user engagement.
The project is spearheaded by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS). The management of BharatGen is entrusted to the TIH Foundation for IoT and IOE, which will collaborate with leading universities and research institutions across the nation to advance the project's objectives.
BharatGen stands out due to its unique features:
Multilingual and Multimodal Models: The project will develop AI systems that function across multiple Indian languages and communication forms, including text and speech.
Bhartiya Data Set: By utilizing data sourced from India, the AI models will be tailored to meet local needs, ensuring relevance and effectiveness.

The BharatGen project is expected to be completed within two years, with significant milestones set for July 2026. These milestones will mark the development of critical AI models that are central to the project's objectives.
