Cyclone Dana Heads for Odisha and West Bengal States Brace for Heavy Rains and Strong Winds

चक्रवात डाना ओडिशा और पश्चिम बंगाल के लिए गंभीर खतरा

The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm, named Cyclone Dana, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). As of Wednesday morning, October 23, 2024, the storm is advancing towards the eastern coast of India and is expected to strengthen into a severe cyclone. It is forecasted to make landfall between Puri in Odisha and Sagar Island in West Bengal in the early hours of October 25, with wind speeds ranging between 100 to 110 kmph, gusting up to 120 kmph.

Cyclone's Path and Current Status

Cyclone Dana was initially a deep depression located about 560 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha) and 630 km south-southeast of Sagar Island (West Bengal) as of early Wednesday morning. The storm is moving west-northwestward at a speed of 18 km per hour and is intensifying over the east-central Bay of Bengal. It is expected to become a severe cyclonic storm as it nears the coast.

Preparations and Evacuations

Both Odisha and West Bengal have mobilized large-scale preparations in anticipation of the cyclone's impact. The authorities are evacuating nearly 10 lakh people from vulnerable coastal areas. The evacuated individuals are being relocated to relief camps, which include multipurpose cyclone shelters, flood shelters, and temporary relief centers in government buildings.

Special arrangements have been made for food, drinking water, lighting, sanitation, and healthcare at these shelters, as confirmed by Odisha’s Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, Suresh Pujari.

Districts Most at Risk

In Odisha, fourteen districts have been identified as highly vulnerable to Cyclone Dana's impact: Angul, Puri, Nayagarh, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Ganjam, and Mayurbhanj. In West Bengal, the districts expected to bear the brunt of the cyclone include South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, as well as the neighboring areas of Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Jhargram, and Hooghly.

Rescue Forces and Government Readiness

The governments of Odisha and West Bengal, along with the Coast Guard, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and other emergency agencies, are on high alert. Schools in coastal districts have been closed as a precautionary measure. The Indian Army and Navy have been placed on standby, ready to assist in rescue and relief operations once Cyclone Dana makes landfall.

IMD Forecast and Alerts

The IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall over Odisha and West Bengal from October 23 to 26, especially in the Gangetic regions. The cyclone is expected to cause significant disruptions, with the potential for storm surges, flooding, and damage to infrastructure in coastal areas.

As the cyclone approaches, people living in vulnerable regions have been advised to stay indoors and follow safety instructions from authorities. The IMD and state governments continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring timely updates and precautionary measures.

In summary, Cyclone Dana poses a serious threat to the coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal, with preparations already underway to minimize its impact on life and property. The authorities are working round the clock to ensure the safety of those in the storm's path, as the nation braces for its arrival.
