The International Conference of Telecom Regulators, organized by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), recently took place in New Delhi. This important event was held alongside two major gatherings—the World Telecom Standardization Assembly (WTSA-24) and the India Mobile Congress (IMC-24). Dr. Pemmasani, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Communications and Rural Development, officially opened the conference, which saw participation from significant figures in global organizations such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and GSMA.
The central theme of the conference was “Emerging Trends in Regulation.” This theme aimed to address critical issues related to new technologies and regulatory frameworks in the telecom sector. Experts from around the world shared their insights, fostering an environment for exchanging ideas and collaborative learning. The goal was to equip telecom regulators with the knowledge and tools to stay abreast of new developments and work together to tackle emerging challenges.
The conference featured three main sessions, each focusing on distinct yet interconnected aspects of telecom regulation:
This session delved into the role of regulators in establishing standards for the telecom sector. Discussions centered on how these standards can be leveraged to regulate the industry effectively, enhance service quality, and protect consumer rights.
Focusing on the latest advancements in satellite communication and other non-terrestrial networks, this session addressed the technical and security challenges these technologies face. Experts examined implementation strategies and the potential economic impact of satellite and NTN technologies.
This session concentrated on Over-The-Top (OTT) services, such as WhatsApp and Netflix. Participants discussed regulatory approaches to manage these services, safeguard consumer interests, and address law enforcement concerns. The necessity for new regulations to effectively govern OTT services was a key point of emphasis.
The conference attracted over 150 participants from more than 30 countries, including telecom regulators, industry representatives, and international guests. The substantial level of engagement highlighted the global interest in the regulation of telecommunications.
A significant highlight of the conference was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Saudi Arabia’s Communications, Space & Technology (CST) and TRAI. This agreement signifies the beginning of collaborative efforts between the two countries in the realm of telecom regulation.
In conclusion, the International Conference of Telecom Regulators served as a pivotal platform for discussing emerging trends and challenges in the telecom sector. Through collaboration and knowledge-sharing, participants aimed to strengthen regulatory frameworks that can adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape of telecommunications.
