Win 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought
The European Parliament has named María Corina Machado and Venezuela’s President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia as the winners of the 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. This award, given annually, honors individuals and organizations who courageously stand up for human rights, freedom, and democratic values, often at great personal risk.
Announcing the award, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola praised Machado and González Urrutia for their dedication to restoring democracy in Venezuela. Both have been strong voices against the country’s authoritarian government and advocates for political reform. María Corina Machado, a former member of the Venezuelan National Assembly, is well-known for her outspoken criticism of the Maduro government. Despite threats and persecution, she continues to press for democratic reforms and economic stability in Venezuela. Edmundo González Urrutia, recently elected as the nation’s President, represents a new era for Venezuela, inspiring citizens to believe in change and a democratic future. Named in honor of Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, the Sakharov Prize was created in 1988 to celebrate outstanding efforts in defending human rights and freedom of thought. The European Union awards this honor to individuals and groups advocating for justice, democracy, and the rule of law under challenging conditions. Past recipients include prominent human rights figures such as Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, and Alexei Navalny.
The 2024 Sakharov Prize will be presented in Strasbourg on December 18 during the European Parliament’s plenary session.
