Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha has convened a Special General Meeting (SGM) for October 25 to address pressing governance challenges within the organization. Key topics on the agenda include the controversial appointment of CEO Raghuram Iyer, allegations of corruption against treasurer Sahdev Yadav, and concerns regarding the eligibility of certain Executive Council (EC) members.
Usha’s leadership has been marked by internal strife, particularly regarding Iyer’s appointment. Although selected by a nomination committee led by Olympic champion MC Mary Kom, Iyer's appointment has faced significant resistance from several EC members. This resistance stems from disputes over his salary and suitability for the role, leaving Iyer without compensation since his announcement in January.
In addition to the CEO issue, Usha has highlighted allegations of corruption involving treasurer Sahdev Yadav. Concerns about Yadav’s financial management have fueled distrust among members, prompting calls for accountability. Furthermore, questions surrounding the eligibility of certain EC members to serve in their roles have added another layer of complexity to the governance crisis.
In her email to stakeholders, Usha underscored the urgency of these matters, describing them as "extraordinary and emergent." She expressed the need for collective decision-making to address the challenges facing the IOA and to secure the interests of Indian sports, particularly in light of India’s bid for the 2026 Olympics.
The SGM will take place at IOA Bhawan at 11 AM and will follow a hybrid format, allowing for both in-person and virtual participation via Webex. Usha emphasized that all steps taken during the CEO appointment process were transparent and compliant with the IOA’s Constitution, and she is committed to restoring integrity and trust within the organization.
This upcoming SGM represents a pivotal moment for the IOA as it navigates leadership challenges and aims for greater accountability. The outcomes of the meeting could significantly influence the organization’s governance structure and its preparations for major upcoming sporting events.
As Usha leads the charge for reform, her efforts will be critical in determining the future direction of the IOA and the overall integrity of Indian sports governance.
