Sanjeev Kumar Singla, a seasoned diplomat from the 1997 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), has been appointed as India’s new Ambassador to France. His transition from his previous role as Ambassador to Israel comes at a critical time, given the ongoing Israel-Palestine crisis. This appointment underscores India’s careful diplomatic strategies in the Middle East, especially during such a sensitive period.

Singla’s diplomatic tenure in Israel began in October 2019. During his time as Ambassador, he played a significant role in maintaining strong and balanced relations between India and Israel. Singla’s efforts extended beyond governmental relations, as he also supported the Indian community residing in Israel, which includes around 18,000 professionals and students. Additionally, he engaged with the Jewish community of Indian origin, estimated at around 85,000 people, strengthening cultural and societal ties between India and Israel.
One of the highlights of Sanjeev Singla’s tenure in Israel was his handling of the sensitive and complex Israel-Palestine issue. His diplomatic approach during these challenging times earned him a reputation as an “expert on Israel.” His ability to navigate crises while maintaining a balanced foreign policy aligned with India’s strategic interests made him an invaluable representative in the region.
Prior to his ambassadorial role, Singla served as the private secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for five years, starting from 2014. During this period, he was closely involved in decision-making processes, particularly related to India’s foreign policy, including its approach to West Asia. His experience working directly with the Prime Minister has contributed to his deep understanding of India’s international objectives and diplomatic strategies.
Singla’s diplomatic career spans several key postings in Indian Missions across the globe. He has previously worked in Paris, Dhaka, and Geneva, giving him a broad understanding of global affairs. His familiarity with the diplomatic landscape in France, coupled with his vast experience, makes him highly qualified to take on the new role of Ambassador to France.
Apart from his ambassadorial positions, Sanjeev Singla has held significant roles within the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). He has worked on the US desk and served as a director in the Foreign Secretary’s office, showcasing his versatility and deep knowledge of India’s diplomatic efforts. His experience in these roles has provided him with a comprehensive understanding of India’s global partnerships and foreign policy priorities.
