The 31st edition of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) is taking place from October 23 to 29, 2024, in Visakhapatnam, India. This annual exercise serves as a key platform for enhancing maritime cooperation between the Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN).
Originally launched in 1994 as ‘Exercise Lion King,’ SIMBEX has evolved significantly over the years. It now plays a critical role in bolstering naval collaboration and addressing shared maritime challenges between India and Singapore.
The primary goals of SIMBEX 2024 include:
Enhancing Interoperability: Improving coordination and operational capabilities between the two navies.
Strengthening Maritime Awareness: Fostering better understanding and awareness of maritime security issues.
Collaborative Problem Solving: Working together to tackle common maritime challenges.
SIMBEX 2024 is divided into two main phases:
Harbour Phase (October 23-25):
Conducted at Visakhapatnam, this phase features activities such as:
Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEEs): Interactive sessions for sharing naval expertise.
Cross-deck Visits: Personnel from both navies visit each other’s ships to learn operational procedures.
Sports Fixtures: Friendly competitions to build camaraderie among participants.
Pre-sail Briefings: Discussions to prepare for the Sea Phase.
Sea Phase (October 28-29):
Taking place in the Bay of Bengal, this phase includes:
Advanced Naval Drills: Conducting complex operations in various domains, including anti-submarine, anti-surface, and anti-air warfare.
Live Weapon Firings: Simulated combat readiness exercises involving real-time weapon systems.
Seamanship Exercises: Practicing coordinated tactical maneuvers for effective joint responses.
The official opening ceremony was held aboard INS Shivalik on October 24, attended by key representatives from both navies. This ceremony marked the formal beginning of SIMBEX 2024, highlighting the commitment to maritime security between India and Singapore.
SIMBEX is vital for enhancing cooperation and operational readiness in the Indo-Pacific region. It focuses on:
Maritime Domain Awareness: Joint efforts to monitor security risks in the region.
Defense Collaboration: Reinforcing ties through effective operational collaboration.
Addressing Common Challenges: Working on solutions to transnational issues like piracy and smuggling.
The participation of the Singapore Navy's frigate RSS Tenacious, which arrived with an embarked helicopter, underscores the collaborative spirit of SIMBEX 2024. Together with Indian vessels, including INS Shivalik, both navies demonstrate their readiness for coordinated operations.
SIMBEX 2024 exemplifies the growing maritime partnership between India and Singapore. By participating in joint exercises, both nations aim to enhance their naval capabilities and ensure a secure maritime environment in the region, reinforcing their commitment to peace and stability.
